History

Nordic twinning between Rauma, Naestved in Denmark, Gjövik in Norway and Gävle in Sweden started in 1950. From 1988 to 2013, Alftanaes in Iceland also took part in the twinning activities. The idea was to build and strengthen Nordic identity through mutual support, exchange and learning. The activities included biannual town twinning meetings and coordinators’ meetings, annual mayors’ meetings, sports and cultural days and study visits.

In January 2024, Naestved announced its withdrawal from the Nordic town twinning programme. Rauma, Gjövik and Gävle decided to end their Nordic town twinning in summer 2024.
