General Hazard Warning

What to do if you hear the alarm signal.

  1. Go indoors and stay there.
  2. Close all doors, windows, air vents and ventilation systems. Seal all through holes with materials such as plastic film and adhesive tape.
  3. Open the radio or YLE’s tv teletext pages 112, 867-868. Stay calm and wait for instructions.
  4. Avoid using your phone (including 112 calls) to prevent congestion on the lines.
  5. Do not leave the area unless ordered by the authorities to do so : travelling could be dangerous.

The authorities have many ways to warn people. The most important method is an emergency warning, which is always issued as the public warning signal goes off. The emergency warning is read out on the radio and displayed on teletext page 112 and, if necessary, on television as running text at top of the screen. The emergency warning is also published through the 112 Suomi mobile app, the YLE Uutisvahti news feed application and on the pelastustoimi.fi and 112.fi sites.

The general hazard signal lasts for one minute, with an alternating ascending and descending 7-second split. The danger over signal is a steady audible signal lasting one minute to indicate that the threat or danger is over.
