Walking and Cycling
We Promote Environmentally Friendly Modes of Transport
The City of Rauma aims to promote environmentally friendly transport and encourage residents to take part in everyday physical activity. Walking and cycling are encouraged rather than driving. The city centre in particular has been developed over the years to make it an attractive and pleasant environment for walking and cycling.
Rauma has a long tradition of promoting walking. The history of Rauma’s promenades goes back more than 40 years, when promenades were organised on summer Saturdays. Shared space, where walking takes place on the terms of the walker, was one of the first in Finland to be introduced in Rauma.
Rauma is a good place to cycle because of its many cycle paths, flat terrain and short distances. Rauma’s current cycling network consists mainly of combined pedestrian and cycle paths, separated from vehicular traffic. Cycling in Rauma is relatively smooth and, thanks to short distances, a competitive alternative to car travel.
Programme to Promote Walking, Cycling and Sustainable Travel Chains in the Rauma Region
A regional programme to promote walking, cycling and sustainable travel chains has been drawn up for Eura, Eurajoki, Rauma and Säkylä, expressing the region’s will to develop more sustainable land use and mobility.
The aim of the programme is to increase walking and cycling, both in terms of everyday mobility and cycle tourism. A common vision and objectives have been defined for the promotion of the measures to guide the realisation of these objectives.
The vision of the programme is “A Mobile and Natural Rauma Region – Pleasant and Safe Mobility by Walking and Cycling”. The programme aims to support the well-being and health of the region’s residents by encouraging physical activity, making walking and cycling safe and smooth, and promoting community and vitality. The aim is to increase walking and cycling by 30% by 2030.
