Wihertoimi is responsible for planning, building and managing the city’s green spaces, parks and forests.

The aim is to create an urban environment that is pleasant, stimulating and respectful of historical values. The planning is based on the guidelines set out in the town and country plan. The master planning of parks and green spaces is mainly carried out by the city itself. The plans are approved by the technical committee. There are about 600 hectares of planned parks, of which about 60 hectares are built-up and the rest are urban parks.

The aim of the development of green areas is to create an attractive environment and to preserve and enhance the value of green areas. Parks and playgrounds are mainly built by city staff.

The felling and management plans and the budget for the commercial forests owned by the city are drawn up on the basis of the forest plans. The aim is to reconcile recreational use and economic benefits of the forests, without neglecting nature itself. There are approximately 3 845 hectares of forests outside the plan area.
