Children’s Parliament of Rauma
Lasten parlamentti vaikuttaa lasten elämää koskeviin asioihin.
The Rauma Children’s Parliament (RLP) is a channel for primary school children to have their say, set up in 2010 by youth services and schools. The mission of the Children’s Parliament is to influence child-related issues in Rauma and to make the opinions of primary school children heard in the city’s decision-making process.
One representative from each primary school in Rauma in grades 4 to 6 is elected as a member of the Children’s Parliament. The members of the Children’s Parliament will have the opportunity to practise working together and as a team. The Children’s Parliament is a learning experience about democratic decision-making, where everyone has a voice. Children’s parliamentarians grow up to be active participants who believe in their own potential to make a difference.
The term of the Children’s Parliament is one year, and the new Parliament will start in the autumn, when school starts. At the inaugural meeting, a chairman, vice-chairman and secretary are elected.
The Children’s Parliament meets about six times a year and, if necessary, gives opinions to the city institutions on matters concerning children. The Youth Counsellor is responsible for the functioning and convening of the Parliament.
The Children’s Parliament organises events for primary school children in cooperation with the youth services. The Children’s Parliament also participates in the annual Children and Young People’s Consultation Day together with the Youth Council. During the Consultation Day, children and young people discuss with decision-makers the topics of their choice.
