The Role of a School Nurse

All primary school pupils have a legal right to free basic health care. This health care is mainly provided by school nurses. During the week, they are usually based in or near the school building.

The primary role of school nurses is to ensure the health and well-being of pupils in the school environment. They carry out annual health checks for students, as well as comprehensive health checks for grades 1, 5 and 8. In addition, school nurses are available for additional check-ups between health checks. Follow-up and support visits are arranged on an individual basis according to a child’s needs.

The school nurse will monitor a child’s growth and development, and carry out tests covering vision, hearing, reflexes, etc. They will also administer vaccinations in accordance with the national immunisation programme. The school nurse is not responsible for treating illnesses. However, they can start the process of treatment of many issues.
