Starting School
Enrolment in the 1st Grade of Basic Eduction
Enrolment to the 1st grade of basic education is for children who will be seven years old in the year in question and have not yet started school. In 2024, children born in 2017 will be enrolled. Based on contact information from pre-primary education and the population register, a letter of enrolment is sent to the guardians of the children at the end of January each year.
Enrolment instructions
Registration is done electronically in the Wilma application. The Wilma ID is the same as the one that the guardian has entered when registering for pre-primary education or during the enrolment period. The user ID is the e-mail address used to create the ID. If you have forgotten your password, you can change it using your e-mail address on the Wilma login page at rauma.inschool.fi.
If neither guardian has a Wilma account yet, the enrolment letter will contain the key code and instructions for creating an account. If your child is not in the system and the letter has not been received, for example because of a move, you can either enrol with the electronic form or contact the Planning Secretary of the city’s Education Department to enrol your child.
Student admission
After the enrolment, the City of Rauma assigns the student a local school. In most cases, the local school is the one closest to the student’s home. In some cases, a school further away can be designated as the local school, for example to avoid oversized classes.
At the guardian’s request, the student may also be placed at a nearby school other than the one addressed to them. In this case, the student is not entitled to free school transport.
Enrolment period
In 2024, the registration period was from 5 to 18 February, during which time the necessary form could be found on Wilma under ‘School Newcomers’ (koulutulokkaat). Decisions on school placements were sent to homes by the end of March. For pupils placed in small groups, the final decision on school placement was made at the end of April.
The content of the letter sent to homes can also be found in the links on this page (except for the possible key code). If for some reason it is not possible to register via Wilma, you will also find a printable, hand-filled form in the links.
After the end of the annual registration period, registration is still possible, for example for people moving from another city. Before school placement decisions are sent out in March, you can enrol by contacting the Planning Secretary. From the beginning of April, enrolments are made by contacting the principal of the school where the child is to be placed.
Forms
Transition to the 7th Grade of Basic Education
When a pupil moves from the 6th to the 7th grade, their school places are redetermined. The city assigns the pupil to a local or other suitable school. In some cases, at the request of the guardian, the pupil may be placed in a local school other than the one assigned to them. In such cases, the pupil is not, as a rule, entitled to free school transport.
At the turn of the calendar year, the Primary School Planning Team, consisting of the principals, the planning secretary and the Basic Education Director, carries out a basic placement of pupils for the following autumn. The placement is based on curriculum priorities, the primary school attended by the pupil, available facilities and student welfare reasons.
The basic placement is communicated by letter at the beginning of the spring term, after which requests for changes can be made. These requests will be dealt with centrally as a whole and implemented where possible. Decisions on school places for 7th graders are sent to guardians by the end of February. Decisions on possible small group places for 7th grade pupils are communicated to guardians by the end of April.
Starting Primary School at a Time Other Than the Start of 1st and 7th Grade
Other than at the start of grades 1 and 7, for example when a pupil moves from another city to Rauma, the principal of the nearest school is contacted directly.
If necessary, the Education Administration will guide in choosing a suitable school. The school closest to the pupil’s home will be chosen as the first choice as a way to minimize the need for transport if class sizes, for example, allow it.
