The Role of a School Psychologist

There are several school psychologists working in schools in the city of Rauma. The services of school psychologists are part of the services of the Satakunta Wellbeing Services County. A teacher, special education teacher or school nurse can refer a pupil to a school psychologist. The pupil can also make an appointment or their guardian can contact a school psychologist. The easiest way to make contact is to call or communicate with a case manager. The school psychologist works in the child’s and adolescent’s daily environment at school, so that difficulties can be identified and addressed as early as possible.

Psychological knowledge and experience of children’s and adolescents’ development and related challenges are taken into account as far as possible in the school’s teaching and educational work and in its planning and development. Psychological research, guidance, counselling, therapeutic discussions and consultation are needed in areas such as learning, school attendance, relationships and difficult life situations.

The school psychologist always works in cooperation with the pupil’s guardians and school staff. Where necessary, there is cooperation with the health service, social services and other professionals working with children and adolescents.
