Dredging of the Rauma Canal is about to start
News
The Rauma Canal suction dredging is currently being prepared and the actual dredging will start in the next few days. The intermediate storage area for the geotubes has been completed and the welding and installation of the suction dredging pipeline started on Monday 24 June. The disposal site is located in the Canal Park on the west side of the marina along the Canal.
To avoid damaging the seawalls, dredging will not take place closer than half a metre to the seawall. A sediment transfer pipe will run alongside the canal wall in the water. A drying polymer will be mixed into the sediment before it is discharged into the geotubes. The spread of sediment in the Channel will be prevented by the installation of a siltscreen near the discharge pipes in the landfill area. As a safety precaution, an oil absorption boom will also be installed near the geotube basin.
The suction will start at the Vänni bridge and will continue during the summer up to the Fyyri bridge. No dredging will take place during the lace week from 20 July to 28 July. Dredging will be completed by the beginning of September, as it is not permitted during the trout rising or spawning season from 1 April to 15 June and from 1 September to 31 October.
